I Dream of a Lifestyle Involving Many Cocktail Dresses V: Coloured Tights

One positive thing about spending the holidays back in Hong Kong is the temperature -it's cool enough to wear a cute jacket but warm enough to wear skirts and dresses without freezing ones legs. In the past, tights used to mean that it was so cold I had to wear them with my school skirt. But this year, for the first time, I'm actually considering wearing black tights as part of a casual outfit. (OK, so everyone does this, but it's new to me.) I'm imagining outfits with short cotton dresses or very long tees with black leggings -kind of Olsen-esque.

Another tights-related style I'm thinking about are coloured tights. Now I've never been an adventurous dresser, so I'm certainly not thinking of wearing colourful tights with crazy coloured shorts and tees, (80's style.) I'm thinking more of the girly, simple way like the images (above and below). I think the key to this look is really to keep the outfit simple. Basically, keep everything else but the tights black or neutral-coloured.

To be honest, wearing colourful tights seem like a lot of effort to me. I mean, do you know how many colours and degrees of sheerness of tights there are out there? What is the difference between '50 den' and '80 den' tights? What does 'den' mean anyways? Just the thought of buying a pair of coloured tights is enough to keep me away. But the argument of you're-only-young-once, and you can't exactly wear coloured tights when you pass a certain age is making me consider having some fun with this trend.

Are you wearing coloured tights this season? If so, how are you wearing them?

I think coloured tights can be really classy when worn properly. I'd choose dark red tights, like maroon, instead of neon shades. But I mostly wear them with dark dresses like black or graphite.

yes! I wear purple ones, 100 den. The other day I layered them on top of black 100 den ones (it's very cold here). I quite liked the effect, because the black tights made the purple colour intense and there wasn't any sheerness. I wear them with black clothes. I have been thinking about buying pink tights, but pink and red might be a bit harder to pull off. So I probably will buy olive and navy.

'den' is short for denier, which refers to the thickness of the yarn used to knit the stockings. the lower the denier, the sheer-er the stockings. 15-30 denier will be very sheer. With coloured tights, you should look for anything over 70 denier as they'll be opaque and warm.

I like to wear coloured tights from time to time, I have them in red, bleu, green, turqoise, ... But always when the rest of my outfit is black.

gosh, i've been wearing colored tights for years! i wear so much black that i thought getting some tights in fun colors would liven up my wardrobe, plus you can experiment with the season's trendy shade without committing to an expensive piece.

Never in a million years! i think it looks....silly-ish.
i dont see how it can be sophisticated worn in any way. maybe im just not fashion forward enough but coloured tights remind me of my childhood.

but on the contrary, coloured skinny jeans is a plusplusplus!

see. im not against colour =D

great comments today, go girls! but don't dread that "certain age" when you think you can't have fun with trends, because who says you can't?

sometimes what an outfit needs is a little slice of bright color between the top of the boots and the hem of an about knee-length skirt. this is a way to try out bright tights without over-committing

i love coloured-tights....don't just wear black dresses for the top...a white dress is actually cute too...

other alternative, pair it with a loose shirt and a black mini skirt...killer look!!!

recommended SHOES: shoes that come with a shiny material; patent leather , satin/silk...i think this is a BIG must.

Last weekend at my School Cotillion I wore an adorable, short BCBG cocktail dress. The upper part was black with embroidered roses shapes and the rest (empire waist and down to mid thigh) was a beautiful cream colored silk. I paired it with black opaque tights and it looked amazing. Everyone else was wearing either no tights (slutty) or sheer, nude tights (boring.) I looked better than expected =) I was also wearing black shoes, and it created this sort of, never ending leg line silhouette. Try something like this next time you're wearing a lighter colored dress.

It's actually my goal to get some new ones.

I have a pair of pink ones that I haven't worn yet- But they're just not the right color.

I want purple! I would wear them with a simple top just like in your first picture.

Ha! I'm wearing a blue cotton 3/4 sleeve mini dress with black tights right now! Anyway, I think brightly colored tights or pastels are too hard to pull off. If you really want color, try plum, silver, navy or brown. It looks very nice.

pink and red remind me of sausage legs but maroon, purple look great as I saw them on other girls on the Internet, they were wearing burgundy tights with charcoal and yellow outfits, it looked surprisingly good. Anyways I don't see myself wearing colored tights but but I admire anyone who can pull off this look. Http://a-mad-tea-party-with-alis.blogspot.com

Personally, I love the colored tights idea, just not for me. I like just not wearing anything on my legs with dresses.

you can be any age and wear colored tights. its all about how you wear them. i remember seeing a friend of my grandmother's a few years back wearing green green tights with a matching geen skirt suit. my jaw dropped when i saw her ans i thought, this is it! it looked better on her than it would have ona girl my age. wonderful! do not restrict yourself by age.

Coloured tights fail at life. I just think they're really tacky - the neon ones at least. They should be left alone except for raves and costume parties.

Black tights, on the other hand, are a lifesaver. They permit one to wear dresses without freezing one's ass off :)

If you're uncomfortable with brightly coloured tights, grey tights are definitely an option, specially with black dresses.
Pick a lighter shade of grey. It's been working for me all season.

i LOVE colored tights--I do have a black pair, but the three pairs of tights i wear the most are reddish brown, gray, and purple. All are from American Apparel. The purple and the reddish/brown pair are these really cool shiny stirrup tights--they sound kind of tacky, but when I wear them with simple minidresses, i get tons of compliments.

Hi, I'm going to visit HK for the first time ever! I am wondering if anyone knows good places to shop... I live in Canada and I like Club Monaco. Is it easy to find nice, and good quality work clothes that are trendy and cheaper than club monaco?
Thanks!

I like colored tights. I am 16. :| But I really think you can still wear it at 25-ish. :))

It depends on what you wear it with. The images of the black dress with colored tights would work for older people. HAHA

If you're scared of brightly colored tights, grey or olive green ones are also available. You can get them, like, at target really cheap, even up to plus sizes.

I love bright purple tights and blue. They actually just work like a pair of colored jeans, so you can wear them with anything that doesn't compete too much with the color. I usually pair them with a navy or black skirt and some black wedges for contrast. Print shirts are best so I don't look too monochrome.
