Are those Asian models I see?

Maybe designers are starting to realise that there are some really rich brand-crazy women in Asia throwing their money at super brands. So in order to help them get a stronger 'feel' of the brand and into the spirits of their craze, designers have finally introduced PROPER Asians onto the catwalk in the Autumn/Winter 05 shows. By the words 'proper Asian', we mean Asians who actually look like Asians, not mixed Asians (such as Devon Aoki,) or the 'Asians' you see in Seventeen.

Asian models from Fashion Weeks Autumn/Winter 2005:
Hye Park was probably the most seen Asian model on the catwalk this season, and its not hard to see why. She looks especially gorgeous in the white Roberto Cavalli dress.

Hye Park from Anna Sui (New York)

Hye Park at Prada (Milan)

Hye Park at Imitation of Christ (New York)

Hye Park at Roberto Cavalli (Milan)

Yoon Ae at Daryl K (New York)

Julianna Imai at Gucci (Milan)
Julianna Imai has got the Gucci's sexy, feminine and seductive look practised to perfection. Which Gucci-crazy Asian wouldn't want to look like her?

I'm not even Asian and I want to look like her! Wow Hye Park in that white dress is amazing, as our the other outfits. Is it just me or are these outfits a lot more wearable than most of those on the catwalk? I definently enjoyed each and every one here, my favorites being the last three. I could definently imagine those as wardrobe staples.

Oooh, ooh, I see Oscars down there! MUST go read. Wasn't Gwyneth gorgeous, and in that new dress style, so very well done? ~off to Oscars now

I am glad the fashion world is finally starting to get the idea that globalization is not just about cheap labor and more profit. Its about breaking down the barrier or race and distance. Its good to see more asians walking the runway and the red carpet these days.

I read a while back that the reason for the lack of asian models was that it was very difficult to find an asian girl that would meet the 5'7" minimum height requirement, but due to recent better understanding of nutrition in Asia, more and more girls were ending up taller.

Well, for whatever reason, I'm glad to see some representation!

Threre's always been tall girls in Asia. Saying they're "hard to find" is just a cop out. At 5'2", I'm about average height in Hong Kong and Tokyo, but when I went to Beijing and Shanghai, I was pretty short.

Anyway, I'm also glad to see a new kind of beauty on the runway.

I am a 5'10 Japanese girl that was brought up in the U.S. It has always been my dream to become a catwalk model. I'm gonna cut to the chase here.... the problem with looking for asian models is that not many asians (especially Japanese women) can't walk in heels more than a mere 2 inches. Luckily, I have the height and the ability to walk and sometimes even run in 5 inch heels. The thing with me is, I'm definitely not skinny enough. I am average but not model skinny. I can go on a diet but I don't think I can become a model.... I really don't have any confidence if I'm pretty enough either.... however, there's the fact that i'm tall and can walk great in heels.... what should i do??

asian(or chinese, japenese, ect.) people, like these three are very beautiful and elegant looking. im glad the fashion industry is finally showing that. the only reason why there were barely any minorities in the fashion world was because there has always been that slight racism thinking that caucasions look superior. but by looking at these pictures these women look just as important or maybe even more important than some caucasion models. the fashion industry can be very racist, thats why you dont see many asian or black models. but if we continue what were doing in this fashion industry and show the world that we're all beautiful, and we're all important, then i think sooner or later no one will have a prob. with any race. clearly these women are beauties, can't wait til i see more!!!

Her real name isn't even Hye! She used to try to hide her height, but now she struts her body down the catwalk with full confidence. Go Unni! I'll be rooting for you all the way!

Most Asian people do not have well define facial features. They also have different body structure compare to most European when they are extremely skinny. I could see why not many are in the modeling industry. Hye Park is okay...but, her facial feature isn't very well define,

I think hye park and most all asians have beautiful features, especially their face! They are so cute a delicate looking. I would say they're perfect for fashion, because they look perfect, almost like untouchable looking. Most of them are skinny, some tall (like other races), and their bodies just have that mystery, they're not obvious. They're beautiful, so are other races too. Like I'm white and I just happened to see this beautiful model so I looked her up.

People have different standards and definitions of what beauty is. I'm not being bias or anything, but in general, Asian have the least attractive features. If they truly felt that they were indeed "perfect" they wouldn't have so many plastic surgeries trying to fix their eyes, nose and chins to look more "European."

I think you can still be insecure about the way you look but still be beautiful. One of you said that they are getting surgery to look more Europeon. Well maybe some don't feel beautiful about theirselves but it doesnt mean they arn't. I also think that, sure, maybe Hye Park isn't the most beautiful asian model, but a lot of asian models look ten times better then Europeon. PLus, there are barely any minorities that make it as far as Hye Park, so fashion bviously sees something in her. I don't think you can, or should even compare whites, or blacks, or asians, latinos, or whatever race to each other becuase they have different qualities and standards. Some of you sound racist in this blog, maybe even I'm sounding racist. But this is wrong comparing who looks better between different nationalities. Maybe you prefer to see more caucations on magazines instead of blacks or asians, but that's your own bias or racist opinion that you keep to yourself until you finally realize that they are all beautiful and in fashion you can't compare one beauty form another.

good to see some diversity, its nice to see a mixture of girls from all races on the catwalk, each look is unique and really can make the girls and clothes stand out.

How pathetic. "Asians are the least desirable people physically in this world, there was even a study done on it. " What the hell? Do you know exactly WHERE this study took place? Because that's definetly not the case here in Canada. When you walk around Toronto all you see are asian girls (tall, short, skinny or chubby) with white men. It seems that's all asian women want to be with nowadays. I met this middle aged woman at the gym and she said all her daughter wants to date are white men. This isn't the first asian models have appeared on the catwalk. Think Devon Aoki (O.K so she's half german whatever.) and Ai Tominaga. Pft. A STUDY! Aha. I thought the world was starting to become more diverse because all the mixed races and everything. But then, oh, I remembered, those racist white woman. As a French and Japanese descent, i've grown to realize that each country and nation has it's own to offer in physical appearances, diffrent eyes, noses, mouths, butts, legs, or whatever. I just find it pathetic that there are still ignorant people out there. I don't know if it's jealousy or if it was just the way they were brought up. stereotypes about surgery on eyes and chins aren't always true.

i absolutely agree. it sickens me so much to see ignorant, racist people still out there. Everyone has their own preference of what looks good. Some different people from different races are beautifully made and some less attractive but there is no such thing as one race more superior than the other in looks. it's like saything the color white is more superior than black. Some people on this blog are RACIST! whoever is reading this... CAUTION, SOME RACIST REMARKS EXIST ON THIS PAGE! i for one, though, love seeing more diversity in races in the media and world. its beautiful.

Amazing how many negative and hateful comments roam these fashion forums. It's nothing new mind you, since they reflect the conservatism and racism which still rule the fashion world, now more than ever! It's so disappointing to see the same girls on the catwalk, season after season, and almost none of them being coloured!! As if the western world only consists of 'white' people. What's up with that?! I'm so fed up with these designers who only use 'white'girls -ánd men- for their campaigns and shows. And although i LOVE to spend my money on beautiful clothes, i will NEVER EVER buy ANYTHING from an 'all-white' designer, that is just not going to happen!!

btw, for anyone who wants to get into the fashion industry...

www.extrasformovies.com is a good place to start.

they show you where to get an agent. You'll need to start getting together a portfolio as well. Remember, you're only as good as your weakest shot so quality over quantity. Also, you don't have to be tall. There are different kinds of modelling: fashion (catwalks for those tall people), commercial (people like you and me) and even parts (foot, hair, hands, eyes, etc...)

good luck to everyone (no matter what race you may be).

this is a bit of an aside but... wow i can't beleive someone said that that asians are the least unattractive and even tried to use some article to 'prove' this!!
firstly, the whole notion of race is considered a social construct...to try to define people through ethnicity is very difficult as there are so many individual differences that identity is clouded..i dont know that is how the theory goes...

secondly, well i have thought about this alot..and have read that people who are racist are using it realy as a means to feel powerful... think of it, its basially a group diss!! putting others down makes u feel better...same with homophobia, etc..its an easy way to feel like you are part of a group somehow, a 'superior' group...

i am chinese but born in north america, so i have thought about this alot..the werid thing about racism is that it may or may not exist..well it seems to proliferate alot more easily through writing, hate mail or letters etc... liek some of these posts!! but in general, its very hard to tell in real life if someone hates you because of your race or maybe they just dont like you!!

and well with the models..its true there are not many asian ones and that is too bad... i went to japan, korea, china...and there were some of the most beautiful girls there! just walking down the street! and they are soo thin too!! like perfect for all the modelling clothes... maybe everyone would feel threated if there were more asian models im not sure..but its so funny, im not sure that asians are the most 'unattractive' just look at asian porn!!

For the record, the idea of race is an invention by society. There are no actual genetic differences between the "races." We look different because of mutations of alleles from adapting to different environments, but when it comes down to it, we're all just bones and organs covered and intertwined in tendons, blood vessels, muscles wrapped altogether with a relatively thin layers of skin cells. My genetics professor spent the past 40 years researching this, he should know. Asians being the least scientifically attractive race? Please.

Besides, just for a little anecdote, the golden ratio, phi, was used as a measurement of beauty by the ancient Romans and Greeks. There was actually a chart of the perfect face according to the golden ratio and as an extra credit project, we superimposed everyone's face onto the chart and the person who matched it the closest was an Asian so... there goes that scientific theory...

this discussion is ridiculous. Asian women vary in shape and size and looks like in every other ethnic group. I don't think the reason for not seeing them on the runway has anything to do with the genetic make-up or physiology of asian women. It has to do with society, trends, and marketing etc. As an asian woman, I am glad to see asian models...but can't we just be glad that asian beauty is getting more exposure in a western manner rather than ask why? I think it's great and long overdue and that's it. Asians are like all other human beings, obviously, so let's be glad that the west is finally opening that door to the east, which has held the asian world and culture to be so very foreign and mysterious for so long. As for people who think asians have the most undesirable qualities: 1st of all, your post doesn't even make any sense..."If it weren't for Asians trying so hard to be accepted into White society, or having some sort of intelligence, they wouldn't even pay too much attention to us." <---what? This is absolutely absurd. Race only goes skin deep but if you really want to play with fire: you should open up a history book and just look at how advanced and ahead asian cultures have been throughout history where western cultures lagged. Also, most plastic surgeons get requests from caucasian women to have more asiatic features like high cheekbones, small noses, more almond shaped eyes, not to mention smooth and blemish free skin. All this stuff means nothing because asians and caucasians and all races are all human beings and are beautiful and rich in so many ways. but if you make comments like that, you really should think about what you say, not only because it is hurtful but because it is painfully and embarrassingly ignorant and you will just be humiliated by how much you don't know about the history of this world, society, culture, and current events. Honestly, I would respect your opinion if you had said it in an informed, educated and articulate manner. But I truly feel that if you could've done so, you would not be saying such ignorant things on a ridiculous blog about fashion. By the way, if you are interested in fashion or the arts, I wish you luck being accepted into those worlds with such a close-minded world view.

Quick Thought: Having spent considerable time in China, especially Shanghai, I can vouch for the fact that there are many Chinese girls more beautiful than Hye Park (although I'm not saying she isn't pretty). However, Chinese culture still views modeling as a rather "low class job" and something that very few educated, respectful girls go into because they're families are so against. I myself have great respect for models, but you can't fight an old cultural stereotype.

Everyone has their own unique beauty, regardless of race, however beauty is only skin deep.I agreed, blasting other ethnic group base on their looks to make one feel better is pretty ignorant. Beauty now a days is dictated my mass media and marketing. Yes some Asians may be persuade by what the "media" display as standard features, which in turn seek plastic surgeries as their key in being accepted in society. But the question is, what cultures don't turn to plastic surgery? With plastic surgery rapidly rising, especially in the western state you have the standard face features? Think again. Maybe the next time you decide to blast other race do your homework would you? For starter, statistics, and a history book would work. Of course if beauty is all you have, more power to you at 60 years old; while we carry on with our intelligence and open mind.

Then there is the steryotype that asian woman have to be gentle, quiet and shy, and fair skinned cause tanned skinned asian are a big no no. So even though we are trying to bring more diversity, we hardly almost never see tanned asians on the catwalk. That is why asians are wanted for their white skin that would look dramatic aganist clothing. That is the industry.

And the Middle Eastern look. I'm a Chinese fashion model and so it's not like I'm COMPLETELY ignorant to what goes on in the fashion industry. But seriously. It's not necessary to tally up all the Asian models there are in the world. Better not to think of anything than to stress the situation into tiny microscopic pieces.

And as for the stereotype thing.. I'm sure you'll be happy to know that I'm making a 3.2 GPA and is one of THE most outgoing, cockiest, hippie group loving piece of shit that's out there in the world. :}

And as for that kid who said that crap about superiority between races... It's okay. It's a confusing time. We're still getting out of that post-trauma shock when racism was abolished legally. And you know what? It won't ever completely go away. Each and every one of us has our own interpretation of "beauty". It's like.. some people prefer cats over dogs. Or pizza over salad. In this case, it's faces over certain faces. Beauty's such a broad subject, we'll be dead before finishing this argument unless the blog owner does us a favor and closes the comments for this entry.

We all need to think of beauty more as "music/clothing/friend/drink choice" rather than a set something. In my opinion, only then will it be gone. A blank facade over the aesthetic facade.

When west picks Asian Model, they pick the ugliest looking girls from east Asia with very bad bodies. Look at them... Why can't they spend a bit more time in they search and check places like Mongolia, Byriatia, Kazakhstan and other central Asian countries. Girls there are tall, nice bodies with unique looks. Chinese have bad bodies East Asians are short. Japanese have bad legs. Common spend a bit of time when you pick these Asian models.

I was originally born in Shanghai and came to Canada when I was very young. When I was young, I had played center in my high school basketball team and various other sports. I am very proud to be a Chinese girl with tall figure (5'8). There are TONS of tall and gorgeous Chinese or Asian girls out there. So go go go Asians!!! :)

Why can't beauty just be taken for what it is ! Dose there always have to be some comment on where they are from ?
Who Cares !!! Let them come from mars as long as they are beautiful!!! Don't ruin the "BEAUTY" and make it "UGLY" like so many like to do,some people just like to make things ugly because they are so miserable

GO ASIAN MODELS!!! I understand what people mean when they say *it's hard to find asian girls who are 5' 7* because when you search *asian models* on google all you get is asian erotic models, who are almost all shorter than 5'6. I want to be an asian model myself, being 5'8 and a 1/2 at 14. (I am half japanese half scandinavian-american) . Yea, I'm not a "proper asian" , but I am pretty asian-looking. I hope to be the first asian supermodel with a C cup and a booty, because I noticed that current asian high-fashion models aren't really curvy...:-P
I hope the "East-European model" trend will end soon, because I think that's one of the reasons that the fashion industry won't use black/latina(<---someone who is NOT BRAZILIAN and NOT VICTORIA'S ANGEL) /asian models. Yes, those moels are cheaper to use, but there are international beauties waiting to bloom...

Who cares what race someone is? Beauty does not depend on whether you're black, white, blue, purple, or any other color -- for that matter. It's stupid to say that all Asians are undesirable when you haven't even seen half of them. Same goes for any other race.

Asian women should not be allowed to model. They are naturally very ugly and have boxy figures.

What is up with some people?! O_o
Let me clear up some of the points in the comments section:
*Hye Park is INDEED gorgeous and has great features- I personally think so. You are, however, entitled to your own opinion.
*Many Europeans and Africans have "high cheek bones, small noses, almond- shaped eyes" as well, it's not just an Asian thing. People of Slavic origin pretty much all also have these features. Doesn't make them Asian. *sigh*, too many false stereotypes.
*There are beautiful people and models from EVERY SINGLE NATIONALITY AND COUNTRY.
*Race does NOT determine figures.
*There is no such thing as ethnic minority in fashion, as it is universal.
*The reason why most of the models are Caucasian is because some of the most well-known labels were SET UP in Europe, so it's obvious to employ local models. There was no assumption in the fashion world that Caucasians were "superior". Now with globalisation and emigration, all kinds of models from all kinds of nationalities will be gracing the, as someone said, "western" catwalks. And that is good, my friends. All people should intergrate. Because beauty is everywhere.
* Quote: "I hope the "East-European model" trend will end soon" - see point above. Also, racist much? What's wrong with Eastern-European models? They're so pretty! And actually there aren't that many of them as in Central and Eastern Europe modelling is seen as a low-life job that uneducated people do. However, to be a good model it takes skill and talent in my opinion. But still, i'm upset at the European hate. Just think though... they're European catwalks, so why CAN'T European models go on them? Why CAN'T models of African descent walk on them? Why CAN'T Asian models walk on them? Europe has long been striving so hard for racial tolerance and there you go with such statements. It's not good!!!
-.-
* sayings such as "go Asians" are very strange > racist? Surely all people should be encouraged to succeed in their chosen path, whatever it may be, not just people from one continent. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
* QUOTE: "As if the western world only consists of 'white' people. (...) I'm so fed up with these designers who only use 'white'girls -and men- for their campaigns and shows. (..) i will NEVER EVER buy ANYTHING from an 'all-white' designer".
Now just hold on there. ORIGINALLY in the "western" (your word not mine) world that was the case, white people COME from Europe. So Duh. But not anymore. Furthermore, NO designer will discriminate against skin colour. There is no such thing as an 'all-white' designer! Name one. But OH NO you won't find one. They want people with the talent to present clothes well on catwalks, not a certain race. By making up that such thing exists, you are just depriving yourself of good clothes :P
Moreover...What's with all this hate for Whites and Asians?!?!?! Seriously!
All this hate is sad to see in the 21st century.
All races have something to offer in this world.
This post is about beautiful Asian models on European catwalks, and here some people go DISSING Europeans and Asians. I don't get it, please explain. I rest my case.

I don't understand this White and Asian hate either...
Anyways, whoever wants to read more about hot new Asian models on European catwalks and why, check out this China Daily article!

Us Asians should all be happy that the West is opening its doors to the East. That there is a renewed interest in Asia!

it's a just question of type.
there are people who like small cute girls with blond hair better, others who like curvy tall redhaired girls and of course there are some who like asians or africans, it's just a little more exotic, because you are not so used to their look. It's also okay if you don't think the way they look is beautiful. But you can't say that's a fact

I think it was damn about time to see Asian models on the international catwalks. There was always the debate about black and white, but HELLO! What about Asians? So, I'm glad to see Liu Wen, Hye Park, Du Juan, or Daul Kim representing Asians in the fashion industry! ^^

First I would just like to say that in my opinion I really don't think that Hye Park is that pretty I've seen much prettier asians, but thats just my opinion. I'm not racist either cuz I'm asian too. and...

"Asian women should not be allowed to model. They are naturally very ugly and have boxy figures"

Ok whoever said this, is so rude. Some asians might be ugly or have boxy figures but people from any other race can be just like this! SO just be quiet. If you have something to say that will offend many others, keep it to yourself!

The Christian Louboutin Sale with their classic red soles are an amazing beauty to behold and a jewel to ornament. Who wouldn't love to have Christian Louboutin Pumps lovely red soles underneath their feet? If only it could be reasonable conveniently, all the world's pretty girls would be seen wearing Christian Louboutin Boots . But alas! Christian Louboutin Sandals are too expensive to be afforded by middle class folks.
